I am ashamed to say this was our first visit to the restaurants of North Park. North Park has recently been on our radar after a friend recommended Bite San Diego, a company that offers tasting tours in several different areas around San Diego and North Park is one of the areas they offer these foodie tours.
I wasn’t aware of all of the different food and unique drink options North Park has to offer. Just across the street from Wang’s North Park is the Seven Grand Whiskey Bar, which was recommended to us by our very friendly and personable waiter at Wangs.
We visited Wang’s North Park for a quick bite to eat after a San Diego traveler’s meet up. The first thing I noticed was the extremely large and wide open space of the restaurant. Wang’s North Park opened just about a year ago and completely renovated this space from what used to be a Big Lots.
The appetizers all looked appealing and we couldn’t decide on just one, so our server offered a sample appetizer that wasn’t listed on the menu for $10. The samples included two vegetable spring rolls, two BBQ beef skewers, two crab rangoon with a spicy plum sauce, and a small portion of their edamame hummus with wonton chips.
The BBQ beef skewers were TO DIE FOR! I could have ordered this appetizer and had it as my meal, it was THAT good. The crab rangoon were delicious, but I’m not really sure if it’s possible to make deep fried cream cheese taste bad. The spring rolls were not too greasy, which was appreciated and I could take or leave the edamame hummus, although, Scott had good things to say about it.
The main course options are listed on the menu by taste rather than meat categories. The categories include savory, spicy, green, sweet, and noodles and rice. We ordered Mandarin Pork from the sweet category and were offered a choice of brown or white rice. It came with snow peas, garlic, ginger and scallions mixed in with the pork. Compared to the BBQ beef skewer appetizer, this dish was less flavorful, but I would still give it 4 out of 5 stars.
Their most popular dish is the walnut shrimp, so if you like seafood, order this one!
They have a nice selection of beer on tap and wine by the glass. I had a $4 glass of the Snap Dragon Pinot Noir that was better than $10 glasses at other restaurants.
They have happy hour every day from 4-7pm where they offer drink and appetizer specials. On Sundays from 4-7 you can get half price entrees in addition to drink and appetizer specials.
