West Coast Tavern – North Park

After our exceptional experience at Uptown Tavern in Hillcrest, we had to give West Coast Tavern a try. This tavern is located in one of North Park’s most historic buildings and flaunts a very cool theater-themed decor. We visited on a Tuesday evening around 7 and were seated immediately.

The staff was attentive and eager to recommend their favorite dishes and drinks. My dinner date ordered a blackberry infused mint julep with infused burbon, fresh mint and a squeeze of lime. I don’t normally like burbon, but this had just the right amount of burbon flavor with a hint of blackberry.

I started off with a glass of Votre Sante Pinot Noir from Mendocino (I can’t get enough of good Pinots) which was full of flavor.

We chose the spinach artichoke dip and bacon wrapped nut-stuffed dates for our appetizers. Our server suggested getting a side of veggies with the artichoke dip — in addition to the warm flatbread. I had never dipped veggies into spinach artichoke dip, but the crisp vegetables were perfect and left us with more room for the rest of our meal. The nut-stuffed dates are to die for. I had tried them at Uptown Tavern and these were slightly different, but just as delicious.

Next up… savory lamb sliders. These mini burgers came with feta cheese, caramelized onion jam and a rosemary alioli and went perfect with the sampling theme of the night. The grilled chicken flatbread was our least favorite dish. The ingredients all seemed to go well together — mozzarella, pepper jack, crushed red pepper, shaved onion, cilantro, lime crema, roasted red pepper — but it was missing that wow factor. It just needs a bit more flavor for my tastes.

We ended the evening with their famous pistachio bread pudding and it couldn’t have been any more delicious. Our meal total with three drinks, two appetizers, two entrees and a dessert came to just about $80. Not bad for how much food we consumed.

If you can, I would suggest snagging a patio table with a fire pit in the center. This would be the perfect spot to take a date — casual, yet intimate.
