With locations in Cardiff by the Sea, Point Loma, Hillcrest and Downtown San Diego, Wine Steals has easily become one of our favorite pizza and wine joints. The atmosphere is very casual, which makes it easy to stop in for happy hour specials or last minute dinner plans. Parking is easy to find at the Cardiff location, with an underground lot that I have yet to find at full capacity.
Many come here not only for the great prices on bottles of wine, but the pizza is some of the best you will find on the west coast. A few east coast Yelpers have even said it’s as good as back home. Pizza is one thing that many California restaurants just can’t seem to get right, but Wine Steals has the goods.
For specialty pizzas, I suggest the Pinot Noir and the Chardonnay. (They have cleverly named their specialty pizzas after wines.) The Pinot Noir even comes topped with raw arugula, so it’s almost like you are eating a salad. Okay… maybe not almost, but at least you will be getting your greens. If you are not sure you can take down an entire pizza, just ask about what pizzas they offer by the slice.
Cheese lovers simply must order one of their many appetizer plates. The Salami and Cheese or Everything Board is great for sharing. The cheese and meats always taste fresh and is the perfect pairing with a few glasses (or bottles!) of wine.
I suggest asking your server for wine recommendations if you find yourself browsing the isles of wine with a blank stare. This is a great way to try new wines and I have never been offered the most expensive bottle. I tell them $15 or under and I’m never disappointed.
I have tried both the Arugula and House Salads and they both exceeded my expectations, especially for a place that serves so many pizzas. It’s the perfect healthy choice if you decide you’re not in the mood for a night of cheese. Even though I highly recommend trying the cheese appetizers and pizzas!
